Today, in the series of ACTeon Insight, we discover a technical and economic feasibility study in the agriculture of the Grand-Est region which is about the valorisation of quarry wastes in biological fertilizer.

This project was born from the will to find a use for the powders resulting from the sawing or the washing of the rocks of which the quarries of the Big East do not know what to make. The study aims to determine if the mineral sources of the fine waste of the quarries of the Grand-Est can be used as fertilizer in agriculture. After INRAE had technically proven the use of this waste as fertilizer, our role was to study the economic feasibility of such a project by analyzing farmers’ preferences and their willingness to pay for fertilizer products from this waste.

This project also makes sense as it serves a dual purpose: to avoid pollution and waste of non-reclaimed waste while providing sustainable and ecological solutions to organic farming.

The study ends in June 2023. It is financed by the CLIMAXION program of ADEME and the Petitjean granite factory and is conducted in partnership with INRAE, Bio en Grand Est, Ecosustain, the Technical Center for Natural Construction Materials (CTMNC) and the National Union of Quarry and Construction Materials Industries (Unicem).

Cloé Riviere, Environmental Economist at ACTeon:

As an economist, the whole analysis process is interesting because it involves setting up a survey with the target audience, the farmers of the Grand-Est region, collecting their responses and analyzing the potential for adoption of the proposed fertilizer products. This process is therefore of great importance, as it allows us to understand the preferences of potential consumers and to determine the economic viability of a product.
