water day 2023

In this regard, the United Nations General Assembly declared 2018-2028 as the International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development”. In order to accelerate efforts towards meeting water-related challenges, The Water Action Decade has commenced on World Water Day, 22 March 2018, and will end on World Water Day, 22 March 2028.

This year Water Day is about accelerating change to solve the water and sanitation crisis. As of now, we are seriously off-track to meet Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6: water and sanitation for all by 2030. Billions of people and countless schools, businesses, healthcare centres, farms and factories don’t have the safe water and toilets they need. To accelerate change, we need more action.

With this mission in mind, today the UN 2023 Water Conference – formally known as the 2023 Conference for the Midterm Comprehensive Review of Implementation of the UN Decade for Action on Water and Sanitation (2018-2028) – is taking place at UN Headquarters in New York, from 22-24 March 2023, co-hosted by the Government of Tajikistan and the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

This will be only the second UN Conference dedicated to water, and will provide a unique opportunity to undertake commitments and accelerate action towards achieving SDG 6 and other internationally agreed water-related goals and targets, including those set out in the 2030 Development Agenda.  With an opening and closing session, six plenary sessions, and five interactive dialogues, as well as side events organized by participants, the conference will embrace the principles of inclusion, cross-sectoral responsibility and action orientation. It will result in a summary of proceedings from the UNGA President that will feed into the 2023 session of the UN High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF).

ACTeon engages with this year UN 2023 Water Conference by bringing to the attention the RefreshingH2O Policy workshop results which are, from today, available for consultation! What to expect from the document? It presents a synthesis of workshop’s discussions, and it is structured around the topics that were addressed during the three days!
