CONTEXT
This study aims to take stock of existing natural and artificial infrastructure in the Grand Est region and to examine the feasibility and opportunities for water storage, retention in natural environments, and even water transfer.
ACTeon is involved in projecting water demand by use (agricultural / non-agricultural) for the horizons of 2030, 2050, and 2100. We also conduct a “solutions benchmark” to identify the success factors and appropriate governance structures for building or optimising hydraulic infrastructure. Finally, we work on evaluating solutions by taking into account their environmental, economic, and social impacts, as well as their contribution to territorial resilience.
OBJECTIVES
The study builds on the results of a previous forward-looking study on water resources in order to:
- Optimise groundwater recharge, including by supporting low-flow levels in rivers and streams;
- Analyse the possibilities for water transfer and storage, taking into account existing infrastructure and impacts on watersheds, including those located outside the regional territory;
- Refine water demand projections for irrigation, renewable energy, and other emerging uses in the context of climate change;
- Provide objective data to support collective and asset-based water management processes.
