A-AAgora – Atlantic-Arctic Agora

Exploring innovative ways for marine and coastal nature restoration in the Atlantic-Arctic region.

Addressing the biodiversity crisis requires being proactive and not simply protecting nature, but also restoring it. The global and European ambitions for this are high, but most restoration projects remain local and small-scale. There is a great need to find new, innovative ways of restoring nature to correspond to different societal goals (economic development, environmental protection, societal needs) and effectively upscale them in a short amount of time, which is what A-AAgora is addressing. Acteon acts as coordinator of a work package, facilitating the link with project demos, helping to create a MOOC to facilitate knowledge transfer, and analyzing the obstacles and levers to scaling up the initiatives studied.

CONTEXT

The project is implementing a variety of innovative restoration activities in 3 demonstration areas (Portugal, Ireland, Norway) focusing on coastal dune and saltmarsh ecosystems, seagrasses and lagoons, as well as kelp forests. These core local implementation activities are complemented with transversal tasks developing serious games to foster deliberative democracy processes, producing digital tools and databases to assist in implementation of technical solutions, carrying out socio-economic analyses and creating sustainable business plans, as well as creating enabling conditions for the upscaling of these activities. Moreover, the project has engaged seven Associated Regions (Iceland, Spain 2x, Croatia 2x, Greece, Cyprus), which are exchanging information with the project and replicating the restoration approaches. The project ultimately aims to contribute to the Atlantic-Arctic lighthouse on restoration to guide the way for the future work in marine nature restorations in the region.

OBJECTIVES

  • To protect and restore marine and freshwater ecosystems and biodiversity;
  • To prevent and eliminate pollution of our ocean, seas and waters;
  • To make the sustainable blue economy carbon-neutral and circular
